ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Imagined as a series of philosophical gateways into an alternate future – where translucent and kaleidoscopic colours have out-shone modernisms straight lines and grids, Architectural Glass Fantasies offer a glimpse into a vibrant vision of a dreamed society. Mold-blown glass overlays digitally printed patterns and forms to present scale models of a more sculptural architectural landscape. Translucent, colourful and constantly changing, these abstract – yet hyper detailed pieces, transport the viewer to an alternate reality where dreams and optimism have done away with economic pragmatism.

LONG DESCRIPTION:
Architectural Glass Fantasies is a growing collection of works by the Danish glass artist Stine Bidstrup, initially sparked by a series of visions by the German writer Paul Scheerbart and German architect Bruno Taut following World War 1. In contrast to the modernist movement of the time that signalled an architectural future in line with economic efficiency and streamlined production techniques, the two visionaries suggested a new urban outlook – built entirely from coloured glass and steel, projecting kaleidoscopic, light-filled effects onto the mountain tops of Europe. Bidstrup has transferred these dream-like visions into a series of mold-blown glass objects complete with hazy transparency and vibrant colours. The complex outer glass forms provide snippets of digitally printed grids and lines within – channelling both the imagined mix of steel and glass, and referencing traditional Venetian pattern making techniques. Scaled down to suggest a type of architectural modelling of the imagined urban landscape, Architectural Glass Fantasies provides an abstracted look into an alternate reality; colourful and ever changing – a world away from the streamlined city-centres of current capitalist driven western societies.

Stine Bidstrup
Glass Artist, born 1982.
Stine Bidstrup is a Danish glass artist, educator and art historian whose work and research explores optical phenomena, along with the interpretation and conceptualisation of ideas about utopian, architectural visions brought to life through glass sculptures, installation and video. Her curiosity revolves around the power of perception, context and point of view in constructing our understanding through vision, and how the human eye and mind are constantly engaged in a myriad of determinations and negotiations. By initiating active ways of viewing – fusing sight with spatial and tactile experiences, she creates work that not only envelopes the eye and touch of the viewer, but also interjects cultural layers of memories and events.
