Anna Søgaard — Cabinet on Wheels
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Cabinet on Wheels by Copenhagen based designer Anna Søgaard aims to offer reflection on how we interact with, and store our items of daily life. Deliberately paired back in aesthetic yet open in function, the cabinet has been constructed from a mixture of solid and laminated douglas pine. Constructed from the outside in, the design provides a sense of safety for the contained items within – referencing storage containers and shipping crates. With the ability to move and adapt to various living situations, the inherent longevity within the piece is in reaction to consumer culture, whilst also reflecting on Søgaard’s own need to adapt to changing living and working environments.

LONG DESCRIPTION:
Cabinet with Wheels was first produced in response to The Cabinet Makers Autumn Exhibition in 2022. Presented with the open, communal workspace of Fabrikken’s artist and designer space on Amager, Søgaard was inspired by the way in which the residing creatives wheeled various objects and furniture out into the communal space each day, before returning to their individual studios each night. Re-contextualising this approach into the living environment, Cabinet on Wheels contains enough internal storage to function within the living space or kitchen, bedroom or studio. Supported with materials by Danish flooring company Dinesen, the outer skin in solid douglas pine presents an almost monolithic form when closed, yet reveals the playful texture of the removable laminated douglas pine shelves once opened – alongside the personal effects of the user. Deliberate in size and scale, the cabinet aims to question what items and objects we actually need within our daily lives, promoting greater consideration into how and what we consume.
DESIGNER BIO:
Anna Søgaard
Product and furniture designer, born 1993.
Working from her studio within a shared creative community in Copenhagen’s Amager district, the inquisitive and open nature of designer Anna Søgaard is reflected both within her approach to her practice, as well as the objects and products she creates. Deeply connected to her preferred medium of wood, Søgaard’s design approach is explorative and at times naive, allowing her mind to wander between experiments as constant iterations create a through line from one project to the next. Geometry and a mathematical approach ensures that her final objects are minimal yet intuitive – focusing on doing the most with the least. Fascinated with the way in which people keep and interact with the objects of daily life, her output contains a strong focus on storage furniture. The function of Søgaard’s objects remain open to the user, which helps to build an enhanced dialogue between people and their belongings, as well as the natural qualities of the wood she uses to shape her objects.
