ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Pylon is a series of modular floor lamps by the Danish design duo Frederik Gustav. Through the repetition of internal lighting elements, Pylon has the ability to adapt from low floor lamps to structures that take on an architectural sense of scale within an interior environment. The collection utilities four hand-sanded polycarbonate sheets as both the functional sub-structure of the collection and the diffuser for the exposed lighting diodes within. A single bent steel bracket secures the lighting fixture to both the external structure and electrical wiring – resulting in a visual language that is industrial and raw, yet poetic due to the repetition of its components.

LONG DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Danish design traditions that place an emphasis on honesty and clarity through construction and form, Pylon was developed by Frederik Gustav in opposition to other contemporary lighting designs that focus on a beautiful exterior body, hiding away a lamps internal components. Instead, Pylon highlights each functional element through a dance of steel, lighting diodes and thin wires – reminiscent of antennas and street lights within dense urban environments. While Pylon is a direct extension of Frederik Gustav’s earlier High Wire series through its exposed industrial aesthetic, the role of each element has been flipped – where High Wire utilised electrical wire and suspension to provide form, Plyon makes use of the lamps polycarbonate diffusers to provide shape and structure, allowing the lighting elements to float within. The same polycarbonate structures also assist in softening the aesthetic of the collection; hand-sanded streaks elongate the emitted light through a lens effect, creating warmth through a series of curved lighting formations that shift and move as the user interacts with each piece.
DESIGNER BIO:
Frederik Weber.
Designer, born 1992.
Gustav Dupont.
Designer, born 1992.
The work of Copenhagen based design duo Frederik Gustav shifts across various functions, scales and contexts to create objects and installations that merge design, architecture and art. Focusing on the joy and excitement experienced through experimentation into building and construction techniques, their work transfers these emotions to the user through sensory objects that play with function, composition and materiality. The duo’s own curiosity towards materials and ways of combining them is evident in their exposed structures that retain and highlight the techniques that produce them. They utilise craftsmanship as an expression of narrative, illuminating stories centred around context of place, societal tendencies or notions of beauty. The process of each project assists in initiating the next, creating a strong structural and aesthetic language across their body of work. Operating from their workshop on the island of Amager, their practice is made up of Frederik Weber and Gustav Dupont.
