Jeppe Søndergaard — Bonds

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Bonds by Danish ceramic artist Jeppe Søndergaard juxtaposes the controlled and the unpredictable through a series of nine ceramic wall sculptures. Produced from stoneware, the composition of each piece references the English cross bond used by brick layers when constructing – with Søndergaard removing its structural foundations to illuminate a gridded outline – architectural and precise in nature. Each piece is then glazed from a mixture of milled and crushed brick collected from around Copenhagen; their shifting material make-up creating variety and unpredictability that is captured in their final form.

LONG DESCRIPTION:

Through a synergy in form and materiality, Jeppe Søndergaard pays homage to the humble brick through Bonds – a continuation from his body of work titled Bonding. Laid out in three rows of wall mounted stoneware sculptures, each individual configuration closely resembles English cross bond brick formations flipped on its side. When viewed from the front, each object presents as a neatly stacked brick construction made from layers know as headers and stretchers. Through Søndergaard’s use of negative space, the same structured compositions jump out from the wall when viewed from an angle – each brick outline overlapping and visually intertwining with one- another. Each row of sculptures appear distinct through the various ways in which Søndergaard glazes each piece. While one row is dry glazed to create a distinct rough and matt appearance, another has been glazed using milled yellow brick with the remaining row glazed in a mixture of crushed and milled red brick. Fired at temperatures normally too high for the production of brick, the crushed and milled glazes react unpredictability – highlighting the unique characteristics of the foraged material soured from the urban landscapes surrounding Søndergaard’s home and studio.

DESIGNER BIO:

Jeppe Søndergaard Hansen.
Ceramic Artist, born 1991.

Working somewhere between a chemist, ceramist and alchemist, you can find Jeppe Søndergaard Hansen on any given day tinkering with various crushed materials – combining, re-arranging and constantly testing formulas through his ceramic art practice. Ever since his education at the Royal Danish Academy on Bornholm, Søndergaard Hansen has deliberately rebelled against any common pragmatism in how to work with and combine ceramic and glaze. Rather than a sign of constraint or control over the material, his gridded forms act as a common aesthetic signifier in which the materials themselves express how they would like to be combined or divided. Foraged local brick is often brought into his projects, and when fired at temperatures that go against conventional wisdom, their solid forms begin to spread and flow across his structures in a juxtaposed dance. He views his practice as a way to engage and connect people and material – inviting doubt, openness and sensitivity through a set of values that emerge from the unpredictability of his creations.
