Anton Hendrik Denys — Leftover Console, Leftover Pedestal.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The Leftover Console and Leftover Pedestal by Anton Hendrik Denys juxtapose shape, scale, thickness and a variety of finishing techniques to create new expressions from tempered stainless steel. The final form of both pieces have been dictated by scrap metal repurposed from the boat building and furniture industry, with a visually light and thin console produced from 5mm stainless steel sheet contrasted alongside a small pedestal crafted from stacked panels of 25mm thick stainless steel. Heat treating both steel forms; each with their own unique material composition, has resulted in the Leftover Console’s rippled and curved form, whilst producing a rainbow surface effect to the Leftover Pedestal’s exterior. A soft to the touch glass bead blasted finish sits alongside rough grinded areas and mirror polishing to further accentuate the diversity between the two objects.

PROJECT QUOTE:

“I have worked with the material on two extremes – one being very thin and long, and the other being smaller; heavy and chunky. I wanted to play with very different textures and colours in their finishing, and it seemed like a nice idea to continue these differences through to the shape and the dimensions of the two works.”

LONG DESCRIPTION:

The Leftovers collection grew out of designer Anton Hendrik Denys’ desire to address material waste within his practice. Often confined to the functional considerations and wishes of galleries and collectors through his commissioned practice, the Leftover Console and Pedestal mark his largest works to date that allow the shape and size of waste material to dictate his final forms. Working alongside master metal manufacturers on the Danish mainland, the two works build on their obscure construction through a focus on surface finishing. The Leftover Console shifts between a matte finish to all but its hand-grinded feet – the raw nature of the lower texture accentuating the soft finish of glass bead blasting that provides the heat treated steel with its dark grey tone. While the Console is visually light and texturally smooth, the Pedestal contradicts these qualities through its sheer weight and material scale – laborious grinding and heat treatment reveal internal imperfections to create a sharp and unpredictable object to the touch. Mirror polished areas of the Leftover Pedestal provide a point of contrast to its rough exterior, with both works reacting to light and movement to highlight Denys’ unique ability to combine contradicting qualities within mono-material sculptural forms.

DESIGNER BIO:

Anton Hendrik Denys.
Designer, born 1990.

The practice of Anton Hendrik Denys celebrates the coming together of the hand and raw material through a sense of play and experimentation. Working from his Copenhagen based studio, Denys brings an honest naivety towards forms across lighting, furniture and objects that distort pre-conceived notions of a materials qualities to create points of tension within his work. From his over-scaled and visually-weighted forms hand-built from light and accessible foam to his use of heat and fire the deform and soften the hardness of steel, his finished objects bare the mark of the maker with imperfections creating character and depth. While he credits this hands-on and conceptual approach to his Dutch education, his corresponding interior design practice is influenced by architectural studies in his native Belgium – Denys transporting Belgium minimalism through a love of bold colour and texture. Within the context of his interior practice, the raw nature of his collectible objects is juxtaposed and accentuated, highlighting how the duality of his practice builds and champions the other.
