About the project:
Reusing leftover material from a local stone manufacturer, utilizing the inverted shapes of already used stone and harvesting new forms out of old. The collection pays tremendous respect to the old historic architecture and materials combined with contemporary details. The Arc Collection represents a simplicity and beauty in total balance.
LONG DESCRIPTION:
The Arc Collection is developed into a series of stone furniture as an offspring of the fascination for staircases, arches and the rhythm and repetitive aspect of classical architecture. Travertine is one of the most appreciated lime stones, used for more than 2500 years and since the rise of the Roman Empire.
With fundamental inspiration from the enigmatic architect Carlo Scarpa who brilliantly possessed the ability to combine the respect of old and historic architecture while introducing new and modern details, the individual pieces of The Arc Collection represent this exact idea. This with the combination of taking advantage of local stone manufacturing reusing leftover material and rethinking the inverted shapes of already used stone. The furniture represents the simplicity and beauty of the architectural detail as individual archetypes, while still maintaining a tactile and functional purpose, combining a highly valued craft with an approach to meet sustainable measures. Together with the refinement of the local craftsmanship and the raw dense materiality of the solid stone, each piece has a personal identity that can easily stand alone.
BIO:
Norm Architects
Design and architect studio
Founded in 2008 by architects Kasper Rønn Von Lotzbeck and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen.
Much like human well-being, the essence of Norm Architects’ work is found in the balance— between richness and restraint, between order and complexity. Each project—whether architecture, interiors, design or creative direction—is imbued with the same intrinsic quality: a simplicity that carries bigger ideas. Guided by the body and mind rather than by trends or technology, Norm Architects’ projects explore ideas that combine aesthetics with a pleasant phenomenology. Their work is sharp and exudes, tacitly, with focus on quality, details and durability. With an office situated in one of the oldest streets of Copenhagen, Norm Architects respect the context and build on the traditions of Scandinavian design—of timeless aesthetics, natural materials and upholding modernist principles of restraint and refinement. Through exploring what it is that heightens the human senses regardless of personal preference, their projects strip spaces, objects, ideas and images back to their simplest form, finding the balance—when there’s nothing more to either add or take away.
