ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Untitled, 2026 by artist and designer Hans Severin Jacobsen explores the relationship between organic formations and the human hand through an object blurring the line between function and sculpture. Constructed from a naturally rounded quartzite bolder found at a local quarry, Jacobsen has cut and squared five sides to create a dynamic interplay with the natural formation of the remaining top surface. Weighing around 90kg, the heavy nature of this stone formation is juxtaposed by a delicate yet solid oak base – the staggered nature of its formation displaying the thin timber panelling utilised whilst also adding an architectural sensibility to the work.

LONG DESCRIPTION:
Untitled, 2026 represents an evolution of Hans Severin Jacobsen’s working relationship with stone sourced from nearby his studio and workshop on the Danish mainland. While past iterations of his sculptural practice retained the original shape and form of these found stones, Untitled, 2026 displays a more deliberate response to the quartzite boulder – Jacobsen shaping and sculpting a geometric rigidity into five sides of the final form. This more deliberate approach also extends into the oak base structure. While earlier works presented a varied approach to the form of each element – timber framing acting as a functional weight bearer to his raw stone formations, within this piece the timber panelled base mirrors the dimensions and geometry of its stone counterpart. Together they appear unified – extended planes displaying the natural grain structure of each. As with previous works, Jacobsen has retained a functional ambiguity within the object; the uneven and raw nature of the top plane along with its awkward height eliminating function that contrasts with its constructivist form – similar to that of a stool or seating element.

Working at the edge of a gravel pit on Denmark’s rural Jutland peninsula, artist and designer Hans Severin Jacobsen transports the wind and dust of a natural landscape eroded by industry into objects with weight and enduring presence. While a background in architectural studies and cabinetmaking allows Jacobsen to delve into the proportion and construction of geometric structures in wood and metal, it is this excavated environment that has shaped an artistic practice led by an intimate relationship with raw material; the rugged landscape connecting Jacobsen to large natural stones that form the conceptual and tangible centre-piece to his ongoing body-of-work. While earlier forms focused directly on the inherit characteristics of each individual stone taken from the earth, the evolution of his artistic language has led to a greater dialogue with his protagonist – Jacobsen juxtaposing the soft and rounded stone forms with geometric supports in wood and metal that almost defy the physical weight they bare. Each of Jacobsen’s sculptural objects remain in iterative dialogue with those that came before, creating an evolving language of contrast and contradiction that, at its core, contain a desire to construct compositions that exude an abiding beauty.
