ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Strata by Kasper Kyster breaks down illumination into three ingredients – a structural steel bracket, a frosted acrylic diffuser and an LED light source. From these three simple components, Strata has the ability to multiply and grow across multiple axes, and re-configure itself from a free-standing light source to a floating pendant. The collection is soft through its diffusion yet industrial thanks to an aesthetic honesty – each component carries equal visual importance within their final compositions. The result is a growing lighting collection that is intuitive and approachable.

LONG DESCRIPTION:
Rather than originating from a desire to create a lighting collection, Kasper Kyster began Strata by investigating modularity through two simple forms – a bracket and a plate. Quickly shifting his focus from furniture to lighting, the solid structural planes Kyster initially imagined have instead been replaced by diffused frosted acrylic that provide Strata its soft glow. With an aim to remove the complexities of modular lighting – both visually and technically, Strata instead focuses on simplicity in form, construction and installation. When presented as a floor standing lamp, the acrylic plates become a supportive component, with a single steel connection bracket having the ability to be flipped to allow modularity in both the X and Y-axis, as well as a hanging point when suspended. This simplicity and flexibility allows Strata to transform from tight configurations in smaller, homely settings; to large, space defining compositions of light within public environments. While currently presented as a lighting family, the building blocks of Strata allow Kyster to foresee various product families and environments through a system of design that continues the explorative and inquisitive way in which he approaches each body of work.
DESIGNER BIO:
Kasper Kyster.
Furniture Designer, born 1994.
An openness and eagerness to learn and engage with both materials and processes – but also his peers and the design community, characterises the approach of furniture designer Kasper Kyster. Working from the creative community of The Factory for Art and Design in Copenhagen’s Amager district, an experimental approach to materials that combine traditional crafts and contemporary technologies has led to a body of work that exists without a singular overarching aesthetic language. Instead, a combination of research and hands-on experiments heavily dictate his outcomes, with an intuitive and spontaneous working method grounded by core principles that seek to unite the static and tectonic, form and function. A growing resume of curatorial positions for exhibitions such as Ukurant as a founding member and The Biennale for Craft and Design as guest curator, has exercised Kyster’s critical approach to design, with a self-analytical view of his own practice. A firm believer in the power of friendly sparring and dialogue around design discourse has created an outward looking design practice that welcomes community, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
