ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Created from a combination of off-the-shelf components and highly customised points of functional ornamentation, Untitled Object for Storage by designer Sigurd Nis Schelde continues his explorations into the unification of disparate motifs and influences within his work. Standardised extruded steel profiles provide the framework for steel plates to form a shelving base, brought together by wire and sand-casted tin connection points formed through a culmination of references including classical ornamentation, 3D printed engines and organs. These same tin connectors affix a PVC mesh to the objects exterior, softening the rigid construction whilst visually uniting each component.

LONG DESCRIPTION:
Untitled Object for Storage forms part of an ongoing exploration into synthesising a contemporary cultural language with industrial aspects of designer Sigurd Nis Schelde body of work. While earlier explorations included the use of colour and a greater cross-section of ornamental reference points, this latest piece aims to condense and highlight each individual component. An important point of difference from earlier works is the inclusion of 3D printed and sand-cast tin components which were previously made by hand. The digitisation of these ornamental components has allowed Schelde to delve deeper into his own artistic language where references to robotic hardware, electronic networks and internal organs meet concepts of classic ornamentation. The shapes are finally spliced, mirrored and warped into various sizes and silhouettes in order to fulfil functional requirements within the final piece. The tin ornamentation is connected with wires to support the structure, and when placed on the exterior of the unit, provide a weighted counterpoint to the semi- transparent PVC mesh surround. Schelde has also shifted this surrounding fabric from canvas in earlier pieces to a light mesh, allowing each component to be visually brought together as a unified whole.
DESIGNER BIO:
Sigurd Nis Schelde.
Designer, 1993.
Working between the communal workshop of Godsbanen and an abandoned motorcycle shop within the centre of Aarhus, designer Sigurd Nis Schelde utilises the diversity of his working environments to produce lighting, furniture and objects that are simultaneously complex and refined. The driving focus within his practice is that of exploration – both within manufacturing and materiality, but also through a database of influences, from contemporary culture to industrial processes and forms of craft. Projects intertwine artistic expression with functional typologies through a deliberate eclecticism of influences and themes; Schelde boiling down seemingly incompatible ingredients to form a single object or body of work. This confluence of ideas and impressions allows Schelde to continue to push his practice in new and unexpected directions, gaining new skills whilst resulting in his own contemporary take on archetypal design silhouettes.
