“I began to do everything that I was taught not to do with the materials. It was here that I fell in love because the material began to talk back to me, to react and riot. I saw a power and a will when it was set free. This has been the core value of my practice ever since.”

About:

Working somewhere between a chemist, ceramist and alchemist, you can find Jeppe Søndergaard Hansen on any given day tinkering with various crushed materials – combining, re-arranging and constantly testing formulas through his ceramic art practice. Ever since his education at the Royal Danish Academy on Bornholm, Søndergaard Hansen has deliberately rebelled against any common pragmatism in how to work with and combine ceramic and glaze. Rather than a sign of constraint or control over the material, his gridded forms act as a common aesthetic signifier in which the materials themselves express how they would like to be combined or divided. Foraged local brick is often brought into his projects, and when fired at temperatures that go against conventional wisdom, their solid forms begin to spread and flow across his structures in a juxtaposed dance. He views his practice as a way to engage and connect people and material – inviting doubt, openness and sensitivity through a set of values that emerge from the unpredictability of his creations.
