Kasper Kyster — Furniture Designer

“As a designer, I pursue the unknown. I aim to test my intuition and experiment with materials and principles to achieve something intuitive. My motivation lies heavily in the process of making – producing and chasing the unique rather than the perfect.”

About:

An openness and eagerness to learn and engage with both materials and processes – but also his peers and the design community characterises the approach of furniture designer Kasper Kyster. Working from the creative community of The Factory for Art and Design in Copenhagen’s Amager district, an experimental approach to materials that combine traditional crafts and contemporary technologies has led to a body of work that exists without a singular overarching aesthetic language. Instead, a combination of research and hands-on experiments heavily dictate his outcomes, with an intuitive and spontaneous working method grounded by core principles that seek to unite the static and tectonic, form and function. A growing resume of curatorial positions for exhibitions such as Ukuart as a founding member and The Biennale for Craft and Design as guest curator, has exercised Kyster’s critical approach to design, with a self-analytical view of his own practice. A firm believer in the power of friendly sparring and dialogue around design discourse has created an outward looking design practice that welcomes community, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
