“From an aesthetic point of view, my intention is to create a textile quality made from hemp yarns that looks and feels more appealing and delicate.”

About:

The work of Copenhagen based textile designer Tanja Kirst is characterised by contemplations into the conceptual and the detailed – bringing to light aspects of textile not immediately apparent. By mixing the industrial with an analogue approach to craft, she investigates how various weaving techniques interact with light, and how this light can raise awareness to textile quality and value. With a particular focus on altering perceptions of sustainable and contemporary textiles including hemp, Kirst works across material scales whilst balancing an aesthetic simplicity with a technical complexity – allowing space for the user to experience and reflect on the qualities and narratives of the raw material. Experiments into subtle colour transitions and gradation into shades are developed with the intention of adding value to the raw textile, whilst instilling it with a sense of poetry that adds to an aesthetic durability.
