Welcome to The Mindcraft Project 2024. This year, we delve deeper into the dual nature of Danish design where the artistic and the functional coexist. Explore the ten selected designers and studios — each bringing a distinct approach to contemporary craft and design through objects in a range of materials and techniques.

Akiko Ken Made
— Cursive

Cursive is an exploration into the duality of ash wood as both a delicate yet strong material for use in furniture. Featured atop an a-frame style base in solid ash, a series of steam bent wooden strips weave together to form a seating platform.

Alexander Kirkeby
— Chandelier

Chandelier by Alexander Kirkeby expresses a new scale and function to the designers work with glass. Closely resembling the construction of traditional Venetian glass chandeliers – a series of blown glass arms radiate from a central body, also clad in blown glass.

Frederik Gustav
— Pylon

Pylon is a series of modular floor lamps by the Danish design duo Frederik Gustav. Through the repetition of internal lighting elements, Pylon has the ability to adapt from low floor lamps to structures that take on an architectural sense of scale within an interior environment.

Lærke Ryom
— Garments

Garments by Lærke Ryom continues the designer's explorations into alternative upholstery techniques with an emphasis on circular design principles.

Marie Holst
— Lost and Found

Crafted through the use of a manually operated, digital TC2 loom, a mixture of reflective, gloss and matte yarns are weaved together to create a tapestry full of depth.

Morten Løbner Espersen
— Vessel #2543, Vessel #2545

An ongoing exploration by ceramist Morten Løbner Espersen into both the simplicity and complexity of his practice. Built on the classic silhouette of an open vessel, these latest works present how Espersen’s use of glaze can dramatically alter the character of his objects.

Sigurd Nis Schelde
— Untitled Object for Storage

Created from a combination of off-the-shelf components and highly customised points of functional ornamentation, this storage object by Sigurd Nis Schelde continues his explorations into the unification of disparate motifs and influences within his work.

Sofie Østerby
— Slope Dining Table

Sofie Østerby has merged monolithic forms with a tactile and humanistic approach to detailing. Inspired by the way in which people interpret and digitise physical landscapes – in this case topographical maps.

Stine Mikkelsen
— Semble

The Semble seating bench by Stine Mikkelsen aims to re-contextualise the humble wooden dowel, exploding its scale and altering its purpose to become both the functional driver and aesthetic centre-point of the piece.

Victor Miklos Andersen
— Carcass Chair

The Carcass Chair by Victor Miklos Andersen presents the culmination of investigations into how the merging of digital and physical processes can combine within contemporary craft.

Since 2008, The Mindcraft Project has been dedicated to elevating Danish designers and makers by showcasing their work to a global audience and serving as a vital link to the established design industry.

The fusion of the words ‘Mind’ and ‘Craft’ captures the essence of the project—where experimental, innovative, and conceptual design approaches meet material knowledge and craftsmanship.

The ten participating designers and studios that make up this year’s edition of The Mindcraft Project have each brought their own distinct approach to contemporary craft and design through objects in a range of materials and techniques.

Maria Bruun, curator: “Within my curation for The Mindcraft Project 2024 there is a duality. On one side, my focus is on designers who are deeply engaged in a form of basic artistic research with a long-term commitment to a single material or craft that highlights the importance of preserving specific knowledge and craftsmanship. On the other side, I have also focused on designers who are curious about exploring and translating their artistic practice into a more industrial context with a commercial potential”.
